LABYRINTH OF JARETH--Fantasy Masquerade Ball XI 2008 (Friday, July 11th)

Taking a break from the China photos, unpacking my luggage and pretty much all the work I'm supposed to be doing (sigh!)... to run off to the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball, held annually in Hollywood. Since I'm short of time and cash, I only went to Friday night this year... It was less crowded than last year (maybe others with cash/gas woes?), although Saturday is the main night, anyway...

Musical performers on the side patio... 'Might be Orbis Lazuli... they were there last year, too...

Up on the top patio... canids...

I had a hard time getting good photos in the dark, plus my camera is getting old--batteries not holding charges, cards scrambling files... *sigh* Time for a new camera...! I had to resort to using a flash, which I HATE... bleh! It messes with all the lovely colored gel lights and wrecks the ambiance. But oh, well...

Stilt-walkers on the patio...

Photobucket
They were also on the dance-floor, but it was SUPER-dark in there, so no chance of a photo there. Funny watching them try to duck out the door to the side-patio. (Did not get that photo, either, *sigh*)

Everyone has an official site these days: http://www.stiltcircus.com/Stilt_Circus/Welcome_.html

There were a number of nice 18thC costumes, as usual... too bad this one is fuzzy, but it gives you an idea of non-flash lighting...

Photobucket
This is out of focus, too, but it's a woman, on the right, wearing some panniers that are see-through with little lights hanging in them! I loved that!

Photobucket
Sweeney Todd-ish.

Fuzzy photo of non-flash lighting on the side-patio...

The night was very comfortable. Less hot than last year, certainly. I was mostly hanging out downstairs, since lighting was slightly better than upstairs and I could try and nip into the main stage to check out the live shows there. Sadly, I missed quite a few of them, anyway!

Photobucket
Not that I could get any decent photos of the stage. This is the band Brother, with bag-piper up front (very blurry!) and digeridoo player in background...

Photobucket
Later there was AM Pacific.

Cool head-dress and a Merlin

Here's my outfit... dress I've had around for ages, with RenFaire lace chemise under it, chainmail belt, silver mask, medieval headdress bought separately...but it's also silver and black, though with gold trim that I didn't have a chance to change. Leather "face" purse from the Renaissance Pleasure Faire (SoCal). And black lace halloween wings...

Photobucket
A sorta Steam/Cyberpunk group... they've got the goggles on, anyway!

Photobucket
Weird mix with the armor... but fun.

People at the cash bar.

Photobucket
Loved the black bird mask of the woman on the right.

Photobucket
Satyr had digitigrade legs, which was cool. (LJ's spellcheck does not like "digitigrade.")

She was with a guy dressed in grass and flowers--but you can't see much of him. Some great couples' costumes there.

Photobucket
Speaking of which... these two couples were fantastic!

Photobucket
And there's always a few kids, which is cool. Definitely all ages and types...

I was late getting there, as usual... still throwing my outfit together! 'Had a nice little snack of bbq chicken on the top patio, though, which was good (no food last year). Didn't dance this year. Just snapped photos and ate and watched some of the shows. I think I'm getting jaded, but then I'm watching the stilt-walkers waltz about the dance floor to Bowie or Sisters or something ethereal or industrial, along with girls in fairy-wings and punk boys in angel-wings and people in lace and crinolines and velvets and lights... and the magic is there! I'll try to get to it next year, I think. 'Need to have an excuse for all that crap I keep in my closets, after all... ^____^

Oh, wow. This gives me a lump in my throat. So much beauty and creativity - I'd love to attend someday. Thank you so much for the photos! More updates, more!!

It's a grand world that has such things in it! ^___^

Very cool pix, and so any great costume ideas made material.

Going to see all the gorgeous costumes is the main reason for me to go! I wish I could have gotten better shots, but aside from my camera, I'm too hesitant to go and ask people for their photos, so I miss so much...

Luckily they have official photographers who post tons of photos after each event at their website. But even they don't capture it all!

So much gorgeous! I love seeing these outfits, some of them are just mind-blowing. Love the look of the Egyptian-style one walking off on the right in the cash bar photo.

I love it that people go through the trouble to put together costumes like that!

And then go out and have a good time! Everyone is very friendly there. And even the mundanes going to other clubs out on Hollywood Boulevard were enjoying the people in costume going in. It was nice all 'round.

That is teh awesome! ;)

Thanks for letting us see your costume, too. I was gonna ask!

Usually I forget about getting a photo of myself... but if I go through all the trouble to dress up, I'd like some proof of it! ^___^

its like a doll convention and a people convention all messed up! i love it. what creative souls, definitely a must attend, thanks so much for your pics!! you looked smashing

I kept thinking of you whenever anyone in 18thC gear drifted by!

I'm so glad every year that you go and post pics!

My friends went one year, but I couldn't afford it at the time. (And still can't, really :P) - but they chattered on so much about the fantastic costumes.

There are tons of pictures posted on the Official Site--better than mine!

It's only around $30 admission... which isn't bad for live entertainment (several bands other acts), and all the decor and lights. They used to have a huge unicorn to pose with last year--but it wasn't there this year... The entertainment is always similar, but slightly different... and the costumes are all different. People really seem to go out to dress up, which is fun.

Parking isn't bad around there... there are lots of clubs and the Pantages Theater, so there are lots--about $5 to $10... maybe some free spots if you walk a bit or take the subway.

Glad you went and posted these pictures. I thought this event was in October?

Nope... it's in the summer, which is why I often can't go--since conventions conflict with it! They start announcing it on their website earlier in the year and sometimes they sell out quicker than others... Last year was the first time they did 2 nights rather than one, so it's easier to get a ticket to at least one night now.

Way cool!! My camera would have given me as much trouble as yours, so don't feel too bad.

My camera is getting old.... poor thing!

And so is my laptop. Gah... Will need to dig up some major money soon!!!

Awesome pics uch a cool event.

It's cool because dressing up is the main event and the theme is so open (fantasy! and masks!)... and don't have to haul stuff to a convention or trot about a dusty Faire site... I can dress, hop in a car, enjoy the event, go home and relax after. And no contests or anything else. Just hanging out and seeing what's going on. It's a nice easy way to use the stuff I have in my closet! ^___^
